Words that Burn Within Me: Faith, Values, Survival Overview
Hilda Stern's desire to be a writer virtually ended after her years of imprisonment, first in the Lodz Ghetto, where her parents and grandparents died, then Auschwitz, and a final death march that ended in the women's prison near Berlin. Though she wrote about her experiences for a few years after the war, first in a DP camp and then in New York, she hid her notebooks after her marriage to Werner Cohen in 1948 -only with her death did her husband Dr. Cohen discover his wife's faded notebooks of a half century before and their 150 poems and prose texts. Two years before her death, storyteller Gail Rosen interviewed Hilda; these interviews and translations of her German poetry by Elborg Forster were brought together by the editors, Cohen, Rosen, and William Gilcher to produce Words that Burn Within Me: Faith, Values, Survival.
